Verona Wine and Design is a small family owned and operated business located in Bucksport, Maine. Verona Island is nestled at the mouth of the Penobscot River between the quaint tidal harbor town of Bucksport and the historic Fort Knox, a fully casemated granite fort (circa 1844). Bucksport offers a beautiful riverfront walkway allowing full view of Verona Island, Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory, the only bridge observatory in the United States and only one of four bridge observatories in the world.
The barrels used in our designs come from many sources, the most preferable being Maine wineries. When more are needed we import them from other areas of the country. The anatomy of a barrel is very interesting to us and our designs incorporate as much of the natural barrel as possible. You will find the chime and croze in many of our products as a signature of the barrel and the beautiful burgundy color is all natural wine stains. The steel hoops and barrel heads offer numerous opportunities for unique designs. Coopering marks enhance the barrel heads and staves and become part of the story of our artisan pieces.
Mike brings his master carpentry experience to the design process with his furniture quality joinery and keen eye for detail. He will go to great lengths to design and create custom pieces to ensure customer satisfaction.
Colleen works on the finishing end of the process making sure the authentic beauty of the barrel staves shines through. Each item they create has a food grade transparent finish that protects and enhances the features of the wood. She also uses her creativity to design wine related products ranging from wine glass charms to wine bottle wind chimes. Most designs are born from a desire for a certain item to be used in their own home and garden areas. One example would be the carved barrel head signs. Signage was needed for the business. The technique of hand carving them was developed and now Colleen makes custom signs.
Our focus is on designing products for the wine enthusiast using the wine barrels and wine related materials. In addition, we have recently expanded our business to include a wine and tapas bar for dining experiences to remember.
